Mumbai: A road caved in near the Girgaon Metro station amid rains in South Mumbai's Girgaon area on Monday morning. The incident took place near the under-construction metro station, which is expected to open for public use likely in a couple of months. A BEST bus reportedly got stuck in the pit caused by the cave-in incident. Videos of the incident have surfaced on the internet.

In the video, one can see the rear tyre of the BEST bus stuck in the section of the road that has caved in. The vehicle is partially tilted on the road and barricades are seen around it to prevent damage to any other vehicle. The bus driver and the conductor can be seen standing near the bus. There are no confirmed reports of any injuries to any individual in the incident as of now.

The road cave-in comes amid ongoing rain showers in several parts of the city. IMD issued a warning predicting heavy rainfall for Mumbai and the surrounding MMR region for the next few hours. The Konkan belt is however on a red alert.

Similar Incident Reported Near Kemps Corner

In a similar incident, a major road cave-in was reported near Kemps Corner in South Mumbai’s Grant Road area on May 26, affecting traffic flow in the vicinity.

The incident occurred when a portion of the road connecting Kemps Corner to Mukesh Chowk developed wide cracks before collapsing completely. The sudden cave-in led to a BEST bus getting trapped at the site, forcing authorities to halt vehicular movement in the area. The road collapse took place near the Gangar showroom, a well-known landmark, and traffic was entirely shut down on the route heading from Kemps Corner towards Nepean Sea Road.

Following the collapse, Mumbai traffic police and civic officials quickly responded by cordoning off the affected stretch to prevent further accidents. Emergency repair work was done immediately to address the damage and facilitate the early restoration of normal traffic.
