Mumbai: A 43-year-old man sustained multiple injuries in Byculla on Wednesday evening after a tree came crashing down due to heavy rainfall. The incident occurred near Kinjal Tower on N M Joshi Marg, where the tree toppled onto three to four parked vehicles.

The victim, identified as Shahnawaz Shaikh, suffered injuries to his head, chest, and back, according to a Times of India report. Passersby immediately rushed him to the civic-run Nair Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. His condition is currently reported to be stable. The incident highlights the dangers posed by ageing and weakened trees during intense weather conditions in the city.

2 Injured In Powai Due To Tree Falling A Day Ago

In a separate incident in Powai, two people were injured after a gulmohar tree collapsed near Jal Vayu Vihar, Sector C, close to S M Shetty School, late Tuesday evening. The Mumbai Fire Brigade confirmed that the tree fell around 8:40 pm, severely injuring Shobha Torne (51) and her husband Prashant Torne (54), who worked as a watchman in the area.

Shobha suffered serious head and shoulder injuries, while shards from the fall pierced Prashant’s arms. Both victims were initially listed in serious condition but are now reported to be out of danger and under medical care.

BMC officials confirmed that the tree stood on private premises and that trimming permission had already been granted to the society in March. Despite this, the tree had not been cut, and the unexpected downpour likely weakened its base, leading to the collapse. The civic authorities have urged housing societies and residents to act promptly on such permissions to avoid similar mishaps.

IMD Warning For More Rains

These incidents come amid ongoing warnings from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), which has forecast more heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms over the next few days. The IMD noted the formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the east central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast on May 21, which is expected to intensify and move northwards from May 22, resulting in increased rainfall across Maharashtra until May 25.
