Mumbai: Heavy rainfall in Mumbai and the surrounding areas of Maharashtra over the past few days has caused significant disruptions and flooding, leading to the issuance of yellow and orange weather alerts. On Tuesday evening, unseasonal rains, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms, resulted in severe waterlogging, particularly affecting areas like Powai in Mumbai and causing traffic congestion.
The Andheri subway was heavily flooded, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to deploy drainage machines for water removal. A tree falling incident near Jalvayu Complex added to the chaos, leading authorities to advise commuters to seek alternative routes, though no injuries were reported. Waterlogged roads in Andheri forced commuters to navigate through deep water.
In Mira-Bhayandar, heavy rain, which began around 7:30 PM, was further complicated by lightning and thunderstorms. The region saw significant electrical activity, especially near Maheshwari Bhavan in Bhayander West.
The Konkan Railway also faced disruptions when a landslide occurred between Vervali and Vilavade stations, caused by the rains. A large boulder fell onto the tracks, momentarily halting train services along this critical route connecting Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. The weather department forecasts that these challenging weather conditions, including heavy rains, are expected to persist for four more days across the region.
A thunderstorm illuminated the sky over Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus during pre-monsoon rains in Mumbai. Train services on the Mumbai-Goa route were temporarily halted due to a landslide but resumed around 8 pm after debris was cleared. The Netravati Express was stopped at Ratnagiri station, while the Jan Shatabdi Express and the Tejas Express were halted at Vaibhavwadi and Kankavli stations, respectively.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai forecasts heavy rain, thunder, and gusty winds for parts of Maharashtra from Wednesday to Saturday. This weather pattern is tied to a cyclonic circulation that is expected to develop over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast, with a low-pressure system anticipated to form around May 22 and potentially move northward and intensify.
Meteorologist Shubhangi Bhute highlighted that rainfall activity in Maharashtra could increase this week due to the cyclonic system, which is likely to affect southern Konkan, south-central Maharashtra, and Mumbai. There is a chance of heavy rains accompanied by thunder and wind speeds reaching 30-40 km/h.
An orange alert has been issued for several regions, including Pune and Ratnagiri, predicting rainfall between 11 cm to 20 cm for Wednesday, while a yellow alert indicates heavy rains of 6 cm to 11 cm for areas such as Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane. Meteorological officials are advising residents to prepare for significant rainfall and adverse weather conditions in the coming days.
