Mumbai: In a major crackdown on the illegal narcotics trade, the Malwani police in Malad arrested two individuals and seized 710 bottles of codeine phosphate-based cough syrup from their possession on Tuesday. The seized syrup, branded as Onerex, has an estimated market value of Rs 3.55 lakh and contains codeine phosphate, a controlled narcotic under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The operation was reportedly carried out under the directives of Zone XI Deputy Commissioner of Police Anand Bhoite. A surveillance team led by Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar and Police Sub-Inspector Dr Deepak Hinde was patrolling Beat No. 1 when they noticed two suspicious individuals. Upon detaining and inspecting them, officers discovered two white sacks filled with plastic bottles labelled Onerex.

Details On Accused Arrested

The arrested individuals were identified as Rizwan Vakil Ansari (29), a resident of Gopal Nagar Chawl in Dharavi, and Naved Abdul Hamid Batatawala (27), a resident of Dongri. Both were taken into custody after preliminary questioning revealed that they were involved in the illegal sale of the narcotic-laced cough syrup.

“During the interrogation, it came to light that the accused were using a delivery service to distribute the banned cough syrup across the city,” said an officer from Malwani police station, as quoted by Mid-day. The duo had reportedly been operating under the radar by using online and door-to-door services to evade detection.

Case Filed Under NDPS Act

A formal case has been registered against them under Section 8(c), read with Sections 22(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985, which deal with the illegal possession and distribution of psychotropic substances.

The police have now launched a broader investigation to trace the source and supply chain of the narcotic substance. Officials are also probing whether the arrested individuals are part of a larger drug distribution network operating within the city.
