Mumbai Police Rescue 412 Child Labourers Since 2020; Complaint Filed Over Minor Tasked With Tree Cutting In Andheri

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have reported significant progress in combating child labour across the city. From January 2020 to June 11, 2025, the police successfully rescued 412 child labourers from various locations.
A recent disturbing incident from Andheri East has raised serious concerns about child safety and violations of labour laws. During heavy rains, a minor was allegedly made to cut tree branches near Hotel Amar at JB Nagar Circle, within the premises of Chakravarti Ashok Co-operative Housing Society Limited. The matter came to light after the Watchdog Foundation, a city-based civic rights group, filed a formal complaint with the Mumbai Police Commissioner and the BMC Commissioner.

Trustee Advocate Godfrey Pimenta stated, “We have lodged a complaint against the society’s managing committee for engaging a minor in a dangerous task during the monsoon season. This is a clear violation of child labour laws and put the child’s life at serious risk.”
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police have reported significant enforcement efforts against child labour across the city. Between January 2020 and June 11, 2025, police rescued 412 children from illegal labour, registered 182 FIRs across Mumbai, and arrested 220 individuals for unlawfully employing minors.
