Mumbai Police Receives Call Threatening Bomb Blasts In City Amid New Year's Eve Celebrations; Caller Traced To Amravati

Mumbai Police Control Room received a threatening phone call on Saturday evening at around 6 pm. The caller claimed that there would be blasts in Mumbai and disconnected the call after saying this, ANI reported. Police started investigations at several places but found nothing suspicious.

The police however soon traced the caller to Amravati, but no arrest was made as he was found to be mentally unstable, an official from Amravati police said.

The 32-year-old man is suffering from a mental ailment and lives in the Raja Peth police station limits. He called the 112 emergency helpline number of the state police on Saturday evening, he said.

The caller claimed that there was going to be a bomb blast in Mumbai and disconnected the call. The man is mentally unstable and is undergoing psychiatric treatment, police said.

Heightened Security Citywide

The threat call comes ahead of the New Year's Eve celebrations which are to be carried out across the city with great grandeur. However, Mumbai police and other security agencies are on their foot to ensure a safe and sound New Year's Eve for the Mumbaikars.

For the New Year's Eve, 22 deputy commissioners of police, 45 assistant commissioners of police, 2,051 police officers, and 11,500 constables will be deployed in the city. Additionally, State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) platoons, Quick Response Team (QRT), RCP security services, and Homeguards will be stationed throughout Mumbai in anticipation of New Year's Eve.

Nakabandi At Various Places

The police will also conduct nakabandi at various places across Mumbai. In crowded areas, the police will conduct patrols and set up checkpoints to keep an eye on security. The Mumbai police will launch special campaigns on the last day of 2023, focusing on preventing hit-and-drive incidents and enforcing traffic rules. Furthermore, the Mumbai police will investigate criminals and organisations involved in anti-social activities.

Elaborate Security Measures Across City

Satyanarayan Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, Mumbai, stated, "For December 31, we have made elaborate security arrangements in the Mumbai city. Our officers and police personnel have been deployed at all important locations. More than 2,000 police officers and around 13,000 policemen will be deployed for that. Beyond that, all our important places will be covered through our CCTVs. We have requested hotel owners to follow the norms and rules laid down by the government order or the Mumbai police."
