Mumbai: After a sting operation exposed a parking scam in the Kala Ghoda area, the BMC decided not to renew contracts with 24 private parking contractors in the 'A' ward. As a result, free parking is now available at ten major spots in Colaba, Fort, Nariman Point, and Cuffe Parade.
This has brought a relief to citizens in South Mumbai, where there were many complaints about operators overcharging or collecting money without proper authorisation.
During a BMC-led sting operation on April 19, the parking contractor at Kala Ghoda was caught overcharging and allowing parking in no-parking zones. Former BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar had written to the Municipal Commissioner demanding that pay-and-park services be made free after contracts expire on May 31. To curb overcharging and restore public trust, the BMC has now made parking free at 10 locations starting Sunday, said civic sources.
Narwekar welcomed the move, calling it a much-needed temporary relief for A Ward, which sees heavy traffic due to government offices and tourist spots. "Free parking should continue until a new pay-and-park policy is introduced. This time, the BMC must ensure greater transparency and accountability, and revise its parking policy before making any further decisions. For too long, citizens have borne the brunt of the alleged nexus between certain BMC officials and contractors. This malpractice must be brought to an end to ensure fair and transparent governance," said Narwekar.
List of Roads with free parking in A Ward:
Horniman Circle, Jamnalal Bajaj Marg, Dorabji Tata Road, Traffic island opposite Eros Cinema, Walchand Hirachand Marg, Ramjibhai Kamani Marg (west side), Currimbhoy Marg, Badruddin Tayyabji Marg, Mudrana Shetty Lane, Tamarind Lane, V.N. Road, Homji Street, and Nagindas Master Lane.
