Mumbai: Pantnagar Police have uncovered a major gang involved in the theft of underground MTNL copper cables in eastern Mumbai. Two accused have been arrested so far, and police suspect the gang may have stolen cables worth crores of rupees over time.
According to officials, multiple cases of MTNL cable theft had recently been reported across various parts of Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. One significant incident took place on April 22, when approximately 1,100 meters of underground copper cable — valued at around ₹10 lakh — was stolen from a stretch between Tilak Road and MG Road in Ghatkopar. The theft disrupted telephone and internet services for numerous users in the area.
MTNL staff began investigating and discovered that unidentified individuals had excavated about one meter below ground to remove the cable. Following a complaint filed by an MTNL official, Pantnagar Police registered an FIR against unknown persons on April 30 and launched an investigation.
