Mumbai: Senior doctors at the state-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai will train orthopaedic surgeons and medical students from across Maharashtra in cutting-edge hip replacement techniques. As part of its 180th anniversary celebrations, the hospital will host a two-day workshop featuring live demonstrations by a leading U.S. surgeon, aimed at elevating the standards of orthopaedic care in government hospitals.

The workshop will be held on July 21 and 22 at JJ Hospital and will focus on advanced hip replacement procedures. The highlight of the event will be a live surgery demonstration by renowned U.S.-based joint reconstruction expert Dr. Shiraz Patel, who is ranked among the top 70 hip surgeons in America. His live surgical procedure will showcase the Direct Anterior Approach — a minimally invasive, muscle-sparing technique that has transformed hip replacement outcomes worldwide.

The live surgery will be broadcast to 15 government medical colleges across the state, allowing surgeons and students to observe and learn modern surgical methods in real time.

JJ Hospital Dean Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar, Medical Superintendent Dr. Sanjay Surase, and Head of the Orthopaedic Department Dr. Nadir Shah are spearheading the workshop. The event is co-organised by senior residents Dr. Rajat Shetty and Dr. Priyanka Meena, along with Dr. Kushal Gohil and Dr. Santosh Ghoti.

Dr. Shah explained that traditional hip replacement surgeries are typically performed from the side or back, which carry higher risks. However, the anterior approach allows surgeons to operate from the front, resulting in less tissue damage, faster recovery, and fewer complications for patients.

“This workshop is aimed at spreading awareness and practical knowledge of cutting-edge surgical practices among India’s next generation of doctors,” said Dr. Shah.
