Mumbai News: Fast-Track Court Sentences 2 Bangladeshi Women To 5 Months Jail And ₹20,000 Fine For Illegal Stay In Ghatkopar

Mumbai: Two Bangladeshi women residing illegally in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area have been sentenced to five months of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹20,000 each by a fast-track court. The arrest was made by the Crime Detection Unit-4 of Antop Hill Police, acting on a tip-off.

According to information received, on January 2, 2025, the police detained the two women near Sangam Building, adjacent to the railway lines in Ghatkopar West. Investigation revealed that they had entered India from Bangladesh without any valid documents.

The arrested women were identified as Indian Name is Chandni Oppu Modal (Age 24), her Bangladeshi Name: Chandni Afzal Maji Resident of Khulna, Daulatpur, Bangladesh Indian Name is Taslima Rafiqul Modal (Age 41), her Bangladeshi Name: Taslima Mujammil Modol, Resident Rudrapur, Jessore, Bangladesh.

During interrogation, both women admitted to having illegally crossed the international border. Technical surveillance also revealed that they were in contact with their relatives back in Bangladesh.

A case was registered at Ghatkopar Police Station under multiple legal provisions, including Sections 318(4), 336(2)(3), 340(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 14(A)(B)(C) of the Foreigners Act, 1946, Section 12(1)(C) of the Passport Act, 1967, Rule 3(A) of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950.

The women were placed in judicial custody on January 6, 2025. Later, on March 1, 2025, a chargesheet was filed against them in Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court (8th Court), Mumbai (Esplande Court). On June 3, 2025, the fast-track court concluded the hearing and sentenced both accused to five months of simple imprisonment and ₹20,000 fine each.
