Mumbai: The Navghar Police have registered a case against a 34-year-old man for drunk driving, obstructing government work, and creating a public nuisance under the influence of alcohol. The incident took place during a late-night checkpoint operation at Airoli Toll Naka on the Mumbai-Thane border in the early hours of July 24.

According to the complaint filed by Police Constable Mayaji Umaji Dhoke (45), attached to the Thane Police, he was on duty from 8 PM on July 23 to 8 AM on July 24, along with Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Jadhav (Navghar Police Station), Police Constable Lambe (Ghatkopar Police Station), and Police Constable Kure (Pantnagar Police Station).

At around 1:45 AM on July 24, a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle (MH 03 BB 3059) was stopped at the checkpoint as it was being driven at high speed in a reckless manner. Upon being stopped, the rider failed to produce a valid driver’s license and began to speak rudely to the officers. When advised to remain calm, he became aggressive and obstructed the police in the discharge of their duty.

The officers noted a strong smell of alcohol from the accused and called in a traffic constable equipped with a breathalyzer. When asked to take the test, the accused refused. He identified himself as Umesh Chandrakant Shinde (34), a restaurant owner residing in Chhatrapatinagar, Bhandup East.

Due to his refusal, the accused was taken to Veer Savarkar Hospital in Mulund East for a medical test. While his blood sample was being collected, he allegedly abused staff and officers, creating a ruckus at the hospital under the influence of alcohol.

Further inspection of the motorcycle revealed that it was missing the front number plate, and the rear plate had a tampered digit, raising suspicions of intentional manipulation. Based on these findings, a case has been registered against Umesh Shinde for drunk driving, creating public nuisance, obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty, and endangering lives by reckless driving. Further investigation is underway.
