Mumbai: A diamond and gold jewellery box worth Rs. 17 lakh was stolen from the Mumbai-Chennai flight on December 8. Following the theft case, the airport police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against an unknown person on Thursday.
According to a police officer, the package, which had been securely packed and sealed, was entrusted to a logistics company known for handling precious goods. Instead of relying on standard air freight, the company chose to transport the parcel via a passenger flight for faster delivery, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
The incident came in light when the employee opened a box upon arrival in Mumbai and saw that one percel was missing. The logistics company immediately alerted its Chennai office and began investigating the incident.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage and questioning airport staff, no signs of tampering or foul play were initially found. However, the theft at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport came as a shock, as authorities confirmed that an unidentified individual had somehow managed to steal the jewellery while it was in transit.
