Over 200 citizens marched from Kotwal Garden near Plaza Cinema, Dadar, to Chaityabhoomi, the samadhi of Babasaheb Ambedkar, on Sunday evening to express their sentiments on social justice and communal harmony.
The march, organised by Mumbai for Peace, an alliance of civil society groups, also marked World Environment Day which will be observed on June 5. Citizens from different age groups held placards, shouted slogans, and sang about peace and a safe environment.
Feroze Mithiborwala of Hum Bharat Ke Log said that the participants in the march wanted to voice their opposition to the communal polarisation in the state. Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, who participated in the event, said that the idea of the march was to take the message of peace and healthy environment to the citizens.
“We had to be out on the streets taking the message of inclusion and equality. Another objective was to draw attention to the environment,” said Gandhi who added that more such events will be held in the city in the future.
