Mumbai: The BMC's G/South ward office has been awarded the prestigious ‘Gold’ Certification by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) in recognition of its outstanding implementation of sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives.

This honour was conferred under the IGBC’s Green Existing Building Rating System, based on the ward office’s exemplary performance in areas such as clean and renewable energy usage, water recycling and conservation, energy efficiency, sustainable waste management, and the promotion of a healthy indoor environment.

Initiatives Include Solar Power, Water Recycling, and Organic Composting

The G South Ward has implemented several sustainable initiatives, including a 20 kW solar power system for clean energy, a 10-kilolitre-per-day sewage treatment plant for on-site wastewater recycling, a 131-cubic-metre rainwater harvesting system, LED lighting throughout the building for energy efficiency, water-efficient fixtures with flow meters on each floor, 100% waste segregation with an organic composting unit, and the use of eco-friendly cleaning agents to promote a healthy environment.

IGBC Awards Honour Eco-Friendly Public Buildings Across India

The IGBC, a national body under the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), works to promote the green building movement across the country. Its goal is to encourage sustainable construction, environmentally friendly technologies, and energy-efficient practices.

Ward Office Recognised for Green Infrastructure and Energy Efficiency

Under its rating system, buildings can achieve Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum levels based on their green performance. "Achieving the ‘Gold’ rating signifies that the G South ward office has met high standards of environmental sustainability, serving as a model for public infrastructure in urban India," said a civic official.
