Mumbai: The Bandra Talao (lake) will yet again go under rejuvenation. This time, the BMC has decided to dewater as much as 70,000 cubic meters of water from the lake and also de-sludge. The work will cost around Rs 20 crore and will be funded by the state’s 15th Finance Commission.

“The water in the lake is polluted due to sewage and garbage, and any living being, including the fish, cannot survive there. The rejuvenation of the lake water is necessary. The funds sanction is awaited,” said a BMC official.

The Free Press Journal had reported on January 23 that the BMC has appointed a consultant to test the pond water and finalise the methodology to dewater, de-sludge and beautify the heritage site.

“The file is with the Municipal Commissioner for final approval. Once the file is cleared, the sewerage project department will float the tender. The work will be executed by H-West ward,” the official added. Assistant Municipal Commissioner (H-West), Dinesh Pallewad, said that the tender is expected to be floated this month.

The 200-year-old Bandra Talao, a Grade II heritage site, is 7.5 acres in size and features walkways around it. Before this, the beautification project of Bandra Talao was done in 2018-19. However, the citizens have time and again complained about floating garbage and poor maintenance of the lake and walkways.
