Mumbai News: BMC Seizes Land Of 2 Developers Over ₹21.63 Crore Property Tax Default; Auction Proceedings Initiated
In a recent crackdown on major property tax defaulters, the BMC initiated seizures and auction proceedings on the land owned by two developers. According to an official statement released by the BMC on Monday, the outstanding property tax owed by them amounts to Rs 21.63 crore (including penalties).

Mumbai: In a recent crackdown on major property tax defaulters, the BMC initiated seizures and auction proceedings on the land owned by two developers. According to an official statement released by the BMC on Monday, the outstanding property tax owed by them amounts to Rs 21.63 crore (including penalties).
These developers have failed to pay the dues despite being given a 21-day period to settle the taxes. As a result, the BMC has proceeded with the seizure and attachment process in accordance with the applicable rules.
As per the BMC's press release, the Assessment and Collection Department of the BMC issued a demand notice for property tax dues of Rs 18 crores for the plot owned by Sumer Built Corporation Pvt. Ltd. in Mazgaon on February 11, 2025.
Similarly, a notice was issued on April 30, 2024, for the plot under the name of R.R. Developers, located in Gavan pada village in Mulund, for the non-payment of property tax amounting to Rs 3.62 crores.
"The action has been initiated for attachment and seizure under Sections 203, 204, 205, and 206 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. If the outstanding property tax is not paid, the process of auctioning the plot will be carried out," said the BMC.
Meanwhile, the BMC has compiled a list of 500 defaulters, which includes names of prominent real estate developers, government corporations, and even civic offices.

According to civic calculations, the pending dues up to March 2010 amounted to Rs 3,242 crores, which have now escalated to Rs 5,397 crores after the addition of penalties over the last 15 years. The civic body has now served notices to attach some of these properties.
