Mumbai: In light of the recent heavy rainfall that disrupted normal life across Mumbai two days ago, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ramped up its monsoon preparedness. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shri Bhushan Gagrani chaired a high-level review meeting on Wednesday at the BMC Headquarters to assess the ongoing monsoon-related works and issued several critical directives to ensure the city is rain-ready.
Shri Gagrani emphasised the need for effective water drainage in low-lying areas to prevent waterlogging. He directed that all pumping sets deployed across the city must be activated on time and maintained for uninterrupted operation. Additionally, the work of desilting drains must be completed within the scheduled timeframe.
He stressed that once concrete roadwork is completed, the stormwater drains in those areas must be thoroughly cleaned. A comprehensive check is also to be conducted to ensure that all stormwater and sewage drains, as well as manholes, are properly covered to prevent accidents and blockages.
The Commissioner instructed that construction debris must be cleared immediately and extra machinery and manpower should be deployed wherever necessary to accelerate pending work. He also ordered Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of each ward to inspect work sites both in the morning and evening to monitor progress.
Special attention is to be given to areas prone to waterlogging, with targeted measures to prevent flooding. Gagrani also stressed the urgent need to fill potholes using modern methods and strengthening the emergency communication system to respond to rain-related incidents efficiently.
The meeting was attended by Additional Municipal Commissioners Dr. Vipin Sharma and Mr. Abhijit Bangar, along with Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and officers from the Roads, Drainage, Transport, and Emergency Management departments.
