Mumbai News: BMC Plans New Medical College In Govandi On PPP Model

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the establishment of a new medical college in the eastern suburbs of the city, marking what could become Mumbai's seventh medical college. The civic body has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) to set up a 100-seat medical college attached to the Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi. The project is planned under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

According to Hindustan Times report, Chandrakant Pawar, Chief Medical Superintendent of BMC’s peripheral hospitals, confirmed the development and stated that the corporation is currently awaiting responses to the EOI. If approved, this would be the first medical college in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.

Currently, Mumbai houses two state-run medical colleges, Grant Medical College and St. George Medical College. The BMC independently operates four other colleges attached to its major hospitals: KEM, Sion, Nair, and Cooper. In addition, the state government has recently set up new medical colleges in Ambernath and Raigad, and the Thane Municipal Corporation has one as well, as per report.

The BMC appears to be moving forward with the proposal, which aims to enhance access to medical education and improve healthcare infrastructure in the city’s underserved eastern suburbs.

5 Employees In BMC Education Dept Found With Fake Disability Certificates

In a recent development, five employees from the BMC’s education department, who were hired under the disability quota, have been deemed ineligible after a new medical assessment found their disability levels to be below the required 40 per cent.

This assessment was part of a broader state-wide review initiated in response to increasing concerns over the misuse of disability reservations across various departments. Out of the 135 individuals employed under the disabled quota, 34 underwent re-evaluation, and these five were identified as not meeting the eligibility criteria.
