Mumbai News: BMC Intensifies Crackdown On Illegal Dumping, Fines Caterers ₹10,000 For Food Waste Near Mithi River In Sakinaka

Mumbai: The BMC has intensified its crackdown on bulk waste generators involved in illegal dumping. In a recent enforcement action, a private catering company was fined Rs 10,000 for unlawfully dumping waste near the Mithi River in Sakinaka during the night of July 30–31. The waste was reportedly transported from Khar. Since June 12, the BMC has imposed fines totaling Rs 65,000 on seven such establishments.

Special Ward-Level Squads Monitoring Illegal Waste Disposal

The BMC has long struggled to curb the illegal dumping of waste on roads and public spaces, particularly during nighttime when unidentified persons discard especially construction waste.

To address this issue, the civic body has formed special squads at the ward level to monitor and take action against such activities in their respective areas. Accordingly, the BMC's L ward team took action against ‘The Gaurav Caterers’ in Khar on Thursday.

Gaurav Caterers Penalised for Night-Time Dumping in Sakinaka

"During the night of July 30–31, a large amount of leftover food waste from ‘The Gaurav Caterers’ was found dumped outside the garbage bins near the Mithi River area in Sakinaka. Upon noticing this, our team inspected the entire waste and identified the responsible establishment. Subsequently, on July 31, the team visited the office of ‘The Gaurav Caterers’ in Khar and took action against them."

Under the Brihanmumbai Cleanliness and Health Subordinate Regulations, 2006, the caterers were fined for failing to keep their premises clean and for improper disposal of hazardous waste without following the prescribed segregation methods.

BMC’s L Ward Fines 7 More Establishments Since June

Similarly, since June 12, the ‘L’ Ward team has imposed fines totaling Rs 65,000 on seven other establishments for illegal waste dumping. These include IDFC Bank Limited on Ghodbunder Road, Thane; Ashok Tower Housing Society in Marol; HDFC Bank in Vikhroli (West); Taximan and Simran Housing Society in Kurla; Godavari Housing Society in Brahmanwadi; and Imtiaz Line Depot. Each of these establishments was issued formal notices before the fines were imposed, said BMC in its press release on Friday.
