Mumbai: The BMC continues to grapple with the recurring issue of stolen manhole covers. During a recent inspection of road concretisation works in the western suburbs, complaints were received about open storm water drain (SWD) chambers posing safety risks.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has recommended the use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) grates, citing their durability and resistance to theft. Civic authorities have now directed officials to evaluate the feasibility of replacing iron covers with FRP grates.

During an inspection of Central Avenue Road in Santacruz West and Model Town Road in Andheri West, the civic officials received complaints regarding the theft of iron grates covering SWD chambers. The IIT Bombay experts who were present during the visit, proposed a sustainable solution: the use of FRP grates.

The experts stated, “FRP grates manufactured to high specifications offer superior durability and a longer lifespan. Due to their heavier weight compared to traditional iron grates, they remain securely in place even during heavy monsoon water flow. Additionally, their non-metallic composition makes them less attractive to thieves, thereby offering a practical and long-term alternative to iron covers.”

Additional Muncipal commissioner (projects) Abhijeet Bangar has directed the officials of storm water drain department to evaluate the feasibility of replacing iron covers with FRP grates. As per Bombay High Court directives, the BMC began installing protective grills across the city’s flood-prone areas to reduce the risk of people falling into drains since 2023.

Civic official claimed that maximum manholes were covered with protective grills during last monsoon. The grills are designed to prevent mishaps, such as citizens, animals, or vehicles falling into open manholes, especially during the monsoon.

* There are a total of 74,693 manholes on sewer lines and 22,593 on storm water drains.

* The manhole covers made of cast iron get stolen frequently since they fetch a good price (Rs3,000 to 5,000) on the grey market for petty thieves and drug addicts.

* The BMC initiated strict action against the offenders and started registering FIRs under various sections of the Indian Penal Code from June 2023.

* September 26, 2024 - A 45 year old woman lost her life by falling into an open storm water drain at Andheri East's MIDC area.

* August 6, 2024 - A 37-year-old man had a miraculous escape after his bike fell into the drain on MS Ali Road in the Grant Road area after its rusty and old lid collapsed.
