On August 23, Chaturadevi Jaiswal (83) went for a walk at 1.15 pm outside on the Andheri-Kurla Road, Sakinaka. A BEST bus number 319 (MH 01 DR 6308) was traveling from Kurla to Sakinaka when its driver negligently collided with Chaturadevi. This caused Chaturadevi serious head injuries, rendering her unconscious. Chaturadevi's body lay at the accident spot for almost two hours.
Around 1.30 pm, Chaturadevi's granddaughter, Priyanka, received a call from her friend informing her that her grandmother had met with an accident. She reached a tea stall near the accident spot around 2.15 pm, where a crowd had gathered and her grandmother lay under a bed sheet by the road, unmoving. Subsequently, the police arrived at the scene and later took the woman to the hospital.
"Almost two hours after the accident, an ambulance arrived and the police brought her to Rajawadi Hospital," said Rinku, Chaturadevi's granddaughter. The doctor examined her and declared her dead immediately. Chaturadevi lived in Uttar Pradesh and had come to Mumbai two months back.
The bus was en route to Majas depot from Kurla Station (West). As the bus reached the aforementioned location, the elderly woman pedestrian came into contact with the rear left side tire and was run over by the bus.
Following the incident, Chaturadevi's granddaughter lodged a case against the BEST bus driver, alleging death by negligence and dangerous driving. "The police arrested the accused and granted bail as well," stated Gabaji Chimate, Senior Police Inspector at Sakinaka Police Station."
