Mumbai Metro Line 3: MMRC Announces Free Wi-Fi At Aqua Line Stations To Address Mobile Network Blackout

Mumbai: In a major relief for commuters on the underground Aqua Line of Mumbai Metro 3, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has announced free Wi-Fi at the concourse level of all operational Aqua Line stations. This move comes in response to persistent mobile network blackouts inside stations and trains, which had disrupted mobile-based services including digital ticketing, UPI payments, and communication.

The announcement was made by Mumbai Metro Line 3 via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the initiative aims to “ease convenience from mobile network issues at the stations.” With this, commuters can now seamlessly access the MetroConnect3 mobile app, Ticket Vending Machines (TVMS), Ticket Office Machines (TOMS), and other UPI-enabled services without connectivity issues.

The Aqua Line, which opened some of the stations partially to the public, the metro line 3 is from Colaba to SEEPZ, covering a 33.5-km stretch and 27 stations—26 of which are underground. While the line had been praised for its modern infrastructure and promise to ease Mumbai’s traffic congestion, the lack of mobile connectivity had led to significant commuter frustration.

The full corridor is expected to be operational by August, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to inaugurate the completed route. Once fully functional, the Aqua Line is set to significantly decongest Mumbai’s roads and reduce pressure on the city’s overburdened suburban railways.

With a project cost of Rs 37,276 crore, MMRC is positioning Metro Line 3 as a transformative step in urban transport. The addition of Wi-Fi services is a critical interim solution, enhancing the overall commuter experience while mobile connectivity issues are being addressed. MMRC reiterated its commitment to providing a “safe, reliable, and seamless metro experience” for all passengers.
