Mumbai, May 8: The wait is finally over for thousands of daily commuters in Mumbai as the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 extension is set to be inaugurated on Friday (May 9) and the line will be open for public on Saturday (May 10). There are reports that the extension will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tomorrow.
This stretch will run from Aarey to Worli Naka, offering a smooth, fully air-conditioned underground ride and a much-needed escape from the city's hectic traffic jams.
What is Metro Line 3?
Metro Line 3 is Mumbai’s first fully underground metro line. The new 22 km section being launched will connect several busy areas like Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli and BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex). Once the entire 33.5 km corridor is operational, it will run from Aarey Depot in the north to Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai, covering 27 stations including Mumbai Central, CSMT and Churchgate.
Significance
This metro line will save time, reduce pollution and ease the pressure on Mumbai’s overcrowded roads and local trains. Roads like Lady Jamshedji Road and Dr Annie Besant Road, which are always packed with traffic, will see some relief.
Travel time will be reduced significantly between residential and business hubs.
Fares start at just ₹10 and go up to a maximum of ₹60, makes it affordable for most Mumbaikars.
However, some connectivity issues remain, for example, the Dadar Metro station is 1 km away from the main railway station, which may cause inconvenience to few of the commuters.
On April 18, Mumbai Metro 3 released exclusive photos of key metro stations like Worli, Dadar and Siddhivinayak. On Sunday, they also unveiled the first look of the Acharya Atre Chowk station, which is located in one of the busiest parts of the city.
"Here’s the first look at the Acharya Atre Chowk metro station constructed amidst relentless traffic, giant utility lines, and the heartbeat of Mumbai’s commercial and residential zones. It’s where precision met planning to make space underground, without pausing the city above," the Metro team shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Modern Facilities at Stations
The new stations are designed with modern infrastructure in mind:
Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates have been installed for quick entry and exit.
Elevators and wide staircases have been built to ensure accessibility for senior citizens, differently-abled people and those carrying luggage.
The interiors look clean and well-lit, reflecting a world-class commuting experience.
With the Aqua Line 3, Mumbai takes a big step forward in building a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly transport system. The fully underground metro will not only reduce surface traffic but also provide a safe and reliable travel alternative for millions of people.
As the remaining phases are completed, the metro will eventually connect major railway stations and commercial hubs, turning into a backbone of Mumbai’s public transport.
