Sholay's Craze In Iran
Mohseni Fard who is the amiable consul general of Iran in Mumbai shared a nugget of information the other day. He said the people of Iran love India for several reasons and one of them was the iconic blockbuster “Sholay”! He said millions of Iranians have watched the movie starring Amitabh Bachhan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra and Hema Malini of Basanti fame several times and don’t seem to have had enough of it. The masala movie had action, great acting, a strong story line, music, photography and provided a deep emotional connect to India. During a visit to Moscow I was surprised that the Russians even now identify India with Raj Kapoor’s iconic song “Awara hoon....”. Little do we realise the importance of our films in soft power diplomacy.
Malegaon Melodrama
When the verdict on the Malegaon bomb blast case was announced by the NIA special judge at the sessions court complex recently, the place was charged with deep emotions with hundreds of people wanting to know the outcome. When Lt Col Prasad Purohit, Sadhavi Pragya Thakur and other accused were acquitted after 17 long years, their supporters were delirious with joy. The accused were subjected to torture of the worse kind. There was apparently even a plan to kill Purohit in a fake encounter. When mediapersons gheraoed him for his reaction to the verdict he replied, “I will continue to serve the nation as before.” At a time when we are hearing only about the corruption of netas, this statement stood out in an inspiring way
