A Churchgate-bound local train overshot the platform by nearly 11 coaches at Charni Road station on Monday afternoon.
The train was being operated by Motorman S.K. Saha.According to sources, Western Railway (WR) has launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the incident.
A WR official stated, “The incident occurred at 2:48 PM, due to which the train was held up for five minutes.” Sources noted that although overshooting is a serious matter, it is considered less dangerous than a "Signal Passed at Danger" (SPAD) incident.
In SPAD cases, a motorman fails to stop the train despite a red signal — a major safety breach. In both overshooting and SPAD events, the primary responsibility often lies with the train crew, especially the motorman, due to lapses in concentration.
While technical malfunctions can contribute, human error is the most common cause.Platform overshooting poses a significant inconvenience to commuters. Passengers are often forced to jump onto the tracks to access the platform, while those waiting at the rear end struggle to board the train.
Such incidents typically happen when the motorman fails to apply the brakes at the correct time, causing the train to overshoot its scheduled halt.
