Mumbai: A 33-year-old man was brutally attacked in Chembur on Tuesday night after he refused to pay Rs 1,000 as hafta. The police arrested five men on Wednesday in connection with the case. The incident happened in Rahul Nagar, Vashi Naka.
The victim, Avinash Rajguru, lives there with his mother and two brothers. According to police, the accused, identified as Arman Nirja (25), Deepak Chandanshive (26), Jai Kale, Ganesh Kandan, and Amol Salve, are residents with criminal records, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The incident happened on Tuesday night, and the five men were drinking in the area. Nirja, Chandanshive, and Kale were shouting in the street, saying no one could stop them because of their past cases. A short while later, they stopped Avinash, who works in a private company, and demanded Rs 1,000 as monthly hafta.
When Avinash refused, Chandanshive hit him on the head with a beer bottle, as reported. The bottle broke, and the group used the broken pieces to stab Avinash in the abdomen, back, and hand. He suffered serious injuries.

Avinash fell to the ground in pain while the other attackers began kicking and punching him repeatedly. After the assault, they fled the scene. The RCF police were notified about the incident, and Avinash was quickly taken to the hospital, according to reports. At that moment, his brother Rajguru was out for a walk. He heard some noise coming from the garden and soon learnt about the attack on his brother, after which he was also assaulted.
"Deepak Chandanshive, Arman, and others live in the same area and have past criminal records related to robbery and assault. They carry sharp weapons regularly. They intimidate local shopkeepers and residents and take money from them,” said Senior Inspector Mahadev Kumbhar of the RCF police station, as reported.
