Mumbai Crime: 2 Youths Arrested For Snatching 74-Year-Old Womans’s Gold Chain In Matunga To Repay Online Gambling Debts

The Matunga Police have arrested two youths for snatching a gold chain from a senior citizen in order to repay debts incurred through online gambling. The accused have been identified as Mohit Ashok Sangishetti, 22, and Rohit Omsingh Gound, 19, both residents of New Mill Road, Kurla (West), Mumbai, and were employed as office boys.

Mumbai: The Matunga Police have arrested two youths for snatching a gold chain from a senior citizen in order to repay debts incurred through online gambling. The accused have been identified as Mohit Ashok Sangishetti, 22, and Rohit Omsingh Gound, 19, both residents of New Mill Road, Kurla (West), Mumbai, and were employed as office boys.

Duo Nabbed by Matunga Police After Targeting Elderly Woman Returning from Temple

According to the police, the incident occurred on the night of July 19, when 74-year-old Vijaya Hariya was returning home after visiting a Jain temple in Matunga. Around 8:40 p.m., the two accused approached her on a motorcycle and forcefully snatched the gold chain from her neck and fled the scene.

Based on Hariya’s complaint, a case was registered under sections 309(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. Using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, the police identified and arrest the accused.

Main Accused Lost ₹85,000 in Online Betting Game ‘Aviator’

Investigations revealed that the main accused, Sangishetti, was addicted to playing the online betting game ‘Aviator’ and had lost ₹85,000. He borrowed money from friends, acquaintances, and relatives. When the debts piled up, he hatched a plan to commit chain snatching and roped in his friend Gound.

First-Time Offenders Currently in Police Custody

The two used Sangishetti’s motorcycle to carry out the crime. This was their first attempt at theft, and although they managed to sell the stolen chain and repay some debts, their actions caught up with them quickly.

Gold Chain Melted Into Biscuit; Police Recover Stolen Item

The police have recovered a gold biscuit weighing 9.80 grams that had been made by melting the stolen chain, along with the motorcycle used in the crime. Both accused are currently in police custody as further investigation continues.
