Mumbai: The Samata Nagar police arrested two men on Sunday for allegedly kidnapping a 27-year-old youth from the Kandivali area and demanding a ransom of Rs 1 lakh from his family. The youth, who was rescued safely, was reportedly assaulted by the accused during his captivity.

The arrested accused have been identified as Aditya Darekar (24) and Shabbir Abdul Rehman Khal (23), residents of Malad and Kandivali, respectively. According to the police, seven other individuals were involved in the kidnapping, and efforts are underway to trace them, as reported by Loksatta.

The victim, a resident of the Poysar area in Kandivali East, was abducted from Bihar Tekdi on Friday. His wife filed a complaint after receiving a threatening call from the kidnappers. The caller alleged that the youth had molested a girl and demanded Rs 1 lakh for his release, warning her that she would otherwise receive his body. The woman was also reportedly abused during the call.

Acting on the complaint, Samata Nagar police formed a team that launched a search in the Kandivali Poysar area. The team successfully rescued the youth and apprehended Darekar and Khal. The police confirmed that the victim had been beaten, but a medical examination revealed no serious injuries.

According to the report, a case has been registered under charges of extortion, illegal detention, assault, and criminal intimidation. Police say the victim told them seven to eight individuals were involved in the abduction. No prior criminal records were found against the two arrested suspects. The victim has been reunited with his family, and further investigation is ongoing.
