Mumbai: An 81-year-old man was allegedly killed in a hit-and-run accident at the Eastern Express Highway in Vikhroli area on Thursday afternoon. The victim, Namdev Bhau Salve, a resident of Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli East could be identified only on Friday when his son, a photojournalist, saw a social media post.
The photographer, Milind Salve, works with a national news channel. He found out about the accident when a relative turned up at his house on Friday morning and showed him a picture being circulated on several social media platforms. The person in the photo matched the description of his father.
Accused yet to be traced
When Milind visited the Vikhroli police station, they had already registered an FIR and narrated the incident to him. The police said the accident happened at around 3pm Thursday and the Vikhroli traffic police were alerted. Namdev Salve was taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal Hospital but was shifted to Rajawadi Hospital given his critical condition. However, he succumbed in the evening during treatment.
The person who hit the octogenarian is yet to be traced. A case has been registered against an unknown person under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 184 (driving dangerously), 134 (a) (not taking reasonable steps to secure medical attention for the injured person), 134 (b) (not reporting the circumstances of the occurrence (accident) to a police officer or a police station), of the Motor Vehicles Act.
