Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday clarified that the government’s recent resolution (GR) facilitating Marathas to obtain reservation through documentary evidence will not affect the rights of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
His statement came after senior OBC leader and minister Chhagan Bhujbal expressed disappointment, skipped the cabinet meeting, and announced plans to challenge the GR in court after consulting legal experts.
GR Aimed at Genuine Claimants
Fadnavis said he has held discussions with Bhujbal and assured him that the GR is not a blanket order but a proof-based measure aimed at genuine claimants.
“Some people are deliberately creating misunderstandings. But our politics has always been about moving forward together. We are taking both Maratha and OBC communities along. The Maratha community is important and has contributed significantly to the state’s development. Their welfare must be ensured,” he said.
Historical Records Used as Proof
Explaining the background, Fadnavis noted that unlike other regions, Marathwada was under Nizam’s rule and not British rule, hence historical records are found in Hyderabad. “We have accepted those documents as proof. Genuine claimants will benefit, and no misuse is possible,” the CM added.
Government Will Not Allow Injustice to OBCs
He further reassured OBC communities that the government will never allow injustice to them. “We will not take away from one community to give to another. Marathas will get what belongs to Marathas, and OBCs will get what belongs to OBCs. We will never set the two communities against each other,” Fadnavis asserted.
