At least six persons were injured on Thursday afternoon near the Khopoli exit along the Mumbai-Pune expressway after a truck rammed into 11 vehicles, mostly cars. The impact was so high that vehicles were piled up on top of another vehicle.
Accident took place near the Khopoli exit
The incident took place at 12:55 pm near Khopoli exit in Raigad district, around 75 kilometers from Mumbai said police. Of the six injured, there were women including a man, his wife, and his mother.
According to police, road surfacing work is going on near the Khopoli exit on the Mumbai lane of the highway and thus vehicles were moving at a slow pace. In the meantime, a truck proceeding from Pune to Mumbai went out of control, possibly due to brake failure, and rammed into 11 vehicles. Six persons, including three women, sustained minor injuries in the pile-up. While five of the injured were admitted at Khopoli hospital, one woman has been sent to MGM Hospital in Kamothe, informed police.
Truck driver fled the scene after accident
Soon after the accident, the police team, IRB rescue team and local volunteers rushed to the site and started the rescue operation. “The relief operation was completed by around 1:45 pm and damaged vehicles were removed from the path and normal traffic towards Mumbai was restored," said a police official from Khopoli police station.
After the accident, the truck driver fled from the accident site and a search is on. Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Khopoli police station against the truck driver under sections 279, 337, and 338 IPC. The truck was bearing registration of Karnataka.
