The Maharashtra government on Monday tabled a bill in the Legislative Assembly seeking to establish the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, a dedicated body responsible for the planning, coordination, and management of the massive religious congregation scheduled to begin on October 31, 2026.
The bill was introduced on the first day of the monsoon session and aims to ensure the smooth execution of the Kumbh Mela, which draws millions of devotees and sadhus from across the country to the sacred sites of Nashik and Trimbakeshwar.
The proposed legislation formalizes the Authority that had already been set up through an ordinance promulgated on June 4, following cabinet approval led by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
According to the bill, the 22-member Authority will be chaired by the Nashik Division Commissioner and will include key officials such as the Nashik District Collector and the Inspector General of Police (Nashik Range) as vice-chairpersons.
The Authority will have the power to coordinate with government departments and local bodies, and can requisition services, facilities, premises, vehicles, and manpower necessary for organizing the event.
Additionally, a committee of ministers will be constituted to periodically review the Authority’s work and ensure timely implementation of preparations and infrastructure development.
