Mumbai: Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has approved the establishment of its sixth regional division, aimed at improving governance and operational efficiency. The new division will be headquartered in Nashik, marking the completion of the transport body’s shift to a six-division structure—mirroring the administrative model followed by the state’s Revenue Department.

New Structure to Decentralise Authority and Improve Efficiency

Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik formally announced the creation of the division, calling it a “necessary and overdue step” to decentralize authority and streamline regional operations. “This new structure will help eliminate bottlenecks and bring decision-making closer to the ground,” said Sarnaik.

Shift from Three-Tier to Six-Division System

Until now, MSRTC functioned through a three-tier system—depots at the taluka level, divisional offices at the district level, and a central headquarters in Mumbai. The absence of a mid-level regional division had long been cited as a reason for bureaucratic delays and coordination issues, especially in handling region-specific challenges.

Karnataka Model Cited as Inspiration

The decision draws inspiration from Karnataka’s transport department, which already functions under a multi-division administrative setup. MSRTC officials say the new model is expected to result in faster decision-making, improved service delivery, and better management of resources.

136 Appointed on Compassionate Grounds

In a separate development, MSRTC has appointed 136 individuals on compassionate grounds, providing employment to family members of deceased employees.

Speaking at an appointment ceremony held at MSRTC headquarters in Mumbai, Minister Sarnaik underlined the government’s commitment to supporting bereaved families. “When a family loses its sole breadwinner, the state must act swiftly. These appointments are not just jobs; they are lifelines,” he said.

New Recruits to Serve in Key Operational Roles

Of the 136 new hires, 70 received their appointment letters during the ceremony. The remaining 66 are expected to join by August 31. The new recruits will serve in various capacities, including Traffic Inspector, Supervisor, Accountant, Assistant Security Inspector, and Clerk-Typist.

MSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar, Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer Girish Deshmukh, and senior officials were present for the ceremony alongside the families of the appointees.

The appointments are part of a broader policy that allows state-run agencies to offer employment to the dependents of employees who die in service. Since 2016, MSRTC has cleared several long-pending compassionate appointment cases, and officials say more are expected to follow in the coming months.
