Navi Mumbai: In anticipation of possible law and order issues due to upcoming religious events and planned industrial strikes, the Raigad district administration has enforced Section 144 across the district. The prohibitory order, issued by the Additional District Magistrate based on the recommendation of the Superintendent of Police, will remain in effect from 12:01 am on June 24, to 12 midnight on July 8.

Authorities cited the likelihood of unrest in key industrial areas including Khalapur, Khopoli, Rasayani, Roha, Mangaon, Mahad, Nagothane, and Alibaug, where workers’ unions are expected to carry out protests and strikes.

Overlapping Religious Events Raise Security Concerns

Religious observances are also expected to draw large crowds during the same period. The Muslim festival of Muharram, which will be observed from June 27 to July 6, involves prayer gatherings at five locations and 72 processions across the district. The Hindu festival of Ashadhi Ekadashi, to be celebrated on July 6, is also expected to draw significant public participation. These overlapping events have raised concerns about potential disturbances, prompting the enforcement of prohibitory measures, said a statement issued by Raigad administration.

Ban on Weapons, Explosives, and Provocative Content

Under the Section 144 order, the carrying of weapons such as sticks, knives, and swords has been prohibited. Citizens are also barred from possessing or transporting explosive or flammable substances. The preparation or use of projectiles, including stones, is not permitted. Public display of objectionable images, effigies, or provocative visuals is banned.

The administration has also prohibited shouting of provocative slogans, playing inflammatory songs, and using loudspeakers for objectionable messages. Delivering inflammatory speeches or making offensive gestures that could disrupt communal harmony is strictly forbidden. Furthermore, assembling of five or more individuals in public places without prior official permission is not allowed during this period.

Exemptions for Government Work and Funerals

The order includes certain exemptions. Government officers and employees on official duty are allowed to carry out their responsibilities without restrictions. Gatherings related to funerals and last rites are also exempt from the ban. Public events, processions, or meetings can be held only with prior permission from the Tehsildar or Executive Magistrate, and the responsibility for maintaining law and order at such events will lie with the organizers.

Administration Urges Public Cooperation

The district administration and police have appealed to all citizens to maintain peace, cooperate with authorities, and avoid actions that could disrupt harmony during this sensitive period.
