The address verification process for passport applicants is strictly conducted by the Maharashtra Home Department in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) laid down by the Central Government, clarified Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam.

The passport verification is carried out under the Passport Act, a central legislation. In addition to verifying the applicant’s residential address, checks are also conducted on criminal background, citizenship status, and other critical information. Since the entire process pertains to national security, it is executed with utmost precision and adherence to rules.

If an applicant has changed residence before applying for a passport, they must provide both their permanent address and current address in the application. A rental agreement showing the applicant’s address is also accepted, but it undergoes a thorough verification during the process.

The police department carries out its duties within the framework of the established SOPs and relevant laws. The Home Department has urged all citizens to provide accurate information in their applications and submit original, valid documents to ensure smooth processing.
