Mumbai: The Maharashtra state government has announced a two-month ban on fishing activities from June 1 to July 31, 2025, as part of its annual monsoon fishing ban under the Maharashtra Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, 1989, and the Amendment Ordinance, 2021.
The ban applies to all mechanized and motorised fishing vessels, which are strictly prohibited from operating within the state's territorial waters, extending up to 12 nautical miles from the coastline.
The Fisheries Department has issued a stern warning that any violations will attract legal action, including the seizure of boats, fishing gear, and catch. The move aims to protect marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fishing by allowing fish stocks to regenerate during the monsoon breeding season.
Authorities have urged fishermen, boat owners, and cooperative societies across the coastal districts to adhere to the ban. The department emphasized that cooperation during this critical period is essential to ensure long-term livelihood security and ecological balance in the region’s marine ecosystem. Regular monitoring and patrols will be conducted to enforce compliance throughout the ban period.
