‘Let People Eat What They Want’: MNS MLA Raju Patil Opposes Kalyan Meat Sale Ban On Independence Day
The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) order banning the sale of meat on Independence Day, which also coincides with Shri Krishna Janmashtami and falls in the holy month of Shravan, has sparked political backlash, with MNS Kalyan Rural MLA Raju Patil strongly opposing the move.

Kalyan: The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) order banning the sale of meat on Independence Day, which also coincides with Shri Krishna Janmashtami and falls in the holy month of Shravan, has sparked political backlash, with MNS Kalyan Rural MLA Raju Patil strongly opposing the move.
Let People Choose What to Eat
Patil criticised the civic body’s decision, questioning why such a ban was necessary when no similar order had been issued in Thane, Ulhasnagar, Navi Mumbai or Zilla Parishad areas.
“Are you going to shut down non-vegetarian hotels, KFC, McDonald’s, and similar eateries on August 15? Let people eat what they want; everyone has the freedom to choose what to eat. The Commissioner should withdraw this decree and not cause unnecessary trouble for us and the administration on an auspicious day,” he said.
Patil urged the Thane Police Commissioner to take steps to prevent any potential conflict arising from the decision.
KDMC’s Order
According to the KDMC directive, all slaughterhouses and shops of licensed butchers selling goat, sheep, chicken and large animal meat must remain closed from midnight of August 14 to midnight of August 15.
The civic body has warned of strict action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, if any slaughtering or meat sales take place during the ban period.
Opposition from Other Parties
The order has also drawn criticism from NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, who called it an infringement on citizens’ food choices.
