Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a large green space within Mumbai. It offers a unique blend of nature and history. The national park is home to diverse wildlife, including animals, reptiles, and birds, including leopards, lions, and more. Sanjay Gandhi National Park is nestled in the northern part of Mumbai. It is spread over 103 square kilometers. This lush forested area plays a crucial role in maintaining the city's ecological balance, earning it the nickname "Lungs of Mumbai."
Why it is called the 'Lungs of Mumbai'
Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP)acts like a giant natural air purifier, absorbing harmful gases like carbon dioxide and other pollutants while releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. In a densely populated and highly polluted urban city like Mumbai, SGNP provides much-needed clean air, helping reduce the effects of vehicular and industrial emissions. The dense forest cover acts as a natural carbon sink, contributing significantly to the city's air quality.
Home to biodiversity
The National Park is home to over 1,300 plant species, 274 bird species, 35 types of mammals, and 170 species of butterflies. Leopards, spotted deer, langurs, and even crocodiles inhabit this diverse ecosystem. Its rich biodiversity contributes to maintaining a healthy urban environment by regulating temperature and preserving soil and water quality.
