A day after a 31-year-old Kenyan national was arrested by Airport Customs with Rs52 crore worth of cocaine, the accused revealed he was promised $1500 by a Nairobi handler to smuggle the drugs. He said the supplier had been persuading him since January, and he finally agreed due to urgent financial need.
On June 2, Kennedy Chege was arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. He had arrived from Nairobi.
“During his personal search, officers recovered four packets of white powder concealed in an ortho waist belt and calf supporters. The narcotics field testing kit confirmed the substance as cocaine,” a Customs official said.
The total quantity recovered was 5,194 grams, valued at Rs51.94 crore. Chege was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“Chege said the drugs were handed to him by a delivery boy sent by a man named Drick in Nairobi. He believed he would pass Customs easily in exchange for quick money,” the official added.
