Mumbai: Tesla has launched its operations in India with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, featuring the Model Y and Model 3. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the inauguration of the 4,000 sq ft showroom, which carries a monthly rental of Rs. 35 lakh.

The experience centre is strategically located near the Apple flagship store, and a grand inaugural event is anticipated following this soft launch. Customers interested in the Model Y or Model 3 will need to visit the Mumbai showroom to place orders. Tesla has imported the vehicles fully assembled from China, incurring significant taxes of around 70%.

Among the showcased models, the Model Y is highlighted as Tesla’s most popular choice worldwide and is available in two versions: Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD. The Model Y offers a range of up to 574 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

The Model 3, Tesla’s more affordable vehicle option for India, will be available for sale later in 2025. The higher variant of the Model 3 can reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and has a range of 507 km with a top speed of 162 km/h.

The pricing for the Model Y in India starts with the RWD variant at Rs. 59.89 lakh and the long range RWD variant at Rs. 67.89 lakh, excluding GST and TCS. Additionally, an administration and service fee of Rs. 50,000 will be charged. Tesla India is also setting up a service centre nearby, leasing a 24,500 sq ft space in Kurla West.

The Model Y will feature future updates for full self-driving capabilities for those who pay an additional Rs. 6 lakh upfront. Tesla specifies that these features require active driver supervision and are not yet fully autonomous, dependent on reliability testing and regulatory approval.

Color options for the Model Y include Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red, along with interior choices of all-black or a black and white finish. The car’s design features improved aerodynamics with redesigned lightbars, a 15.4-inch touchscreen, and advanced acoustic glass for sound insulation.
