Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced the operation of 5,000 additional buses to Konkan between August 23 and September 7 to accommodate the surge of devotees traveling for the Ganesh festival, which begins on August 27, 2025. The announcement was made by Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik after a review meeting held at the Mantralaya on Tuesday.

Emphasizing the cultural and emotional significance of the festival, Minister Sarnaik stated that Ganeshotsav represents an emotional homecoming for thousands of Konkan residents working in urban centers such as Mumbai.

He added that MSRTC’s role in facilitating this journey has always gone beyond profit considerations, reaffirming the corporation’s commitment to public service.

Joining the review meeting were MSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar along with senior departmental heads, who together finalized the operational strategy for this large-scale deployment.

According to an official, passengers seeking to travel during this period can book their tickets for the additional buses through MSRTC’s official website at npublic.msrtcors.com, via the MSRTC Bus Reservation mobile app, or by visiting major bus depots in person.

The decision to increase the number of buses on the occasion of Ganeshotsav this year comes on the heels of the successful operation of 5,200 extra buses for the recent Ashadhi Ekadashi yatra—a campaign that received a strong public response and served as a logistical blueprint for the upcoming Ganeshotsav rush," the official further added. Last year, on the occasion of Ganeshotsav, 4,300 special buses were announced.

Starting July 22, MSRTC will also open group reservations, offering several discounts to travelers. Senior citizens falling under the 'Amrut' category will be granted a full 100% fare exemption, while other senior citizens and women will benefit from a 50% discount on their ticket fares.

These special buses will operate from key MSRTC depots located in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, catering to the high outbound traffic towards Konkan.

"To ensure smooth and efficient travel, MSRTC will deploy staff around the clock at bus stations and major transit points, supported by on-road teams prepared to handle any technical issues or emergencies. Vehicle repair units will be strategically stationed along the Konkan highways to provide immediate assistance if needed. Through this extensive arrangement, MSRTC aims to provide a safe, reliable, and comfortable journey for all travelers during one of Maharashtra’s most cherished festivals" stated an official of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation.
