Mumbai: In yet another troubling incident aboard Mumbai’s suburban railway, a differently-abled man was allegedly assaulted by a woman while traveling in a coach reserved for handicapped passengers.
The incident occurred on Thursday aboard a CSMT–Badlapur fast local between Ghatkopar and Thane stations. The victim, Umesh Patel, 46, a housekeeper and resident of Ambernath, was reportedly traveling home when the altercation occurred.
According to sources, the woman was seated near the door of the specially designated coach, which led to a confrontation as passengers struggled to board and alight. The argument escalated into a physical altercation between Ghatkopar and Thane stations. The woman, reportedly pregnant, disembarked at Dombivli before authorities could intervene, and her identity remains unknown.
Speaking with The Free Press Journal (FPJ), Patel recounted, “I was going home by train when I saw a woman sitting near the door. When I asked her to make way, she started arguing and even hit me.”
Following the incident, Patel filed a formal complaint at the Kurla Railway Police Station, which was subsequently transferred to Dombivli Police Station for further investigation. The Government Railway Police (GRP) confirmed that the case has been registered under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
