Mumbai, May 12: In a move set to transform Dharavi, the upcoming masterplan is aiming to breathe a new lease of life into the heart of Mumbai’s most densely packed neighbourhood.

According to sources close to the project, the vision goes beyond just building new infrastructure – it’s about creating a greener and more liveable community.

Although the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is largely focused on much- needed infrastructure upgrades, the planning involves a conscious effort to weave in vast open spaces, giving residents a refreshing change from the cramped and harsh conditions they have long endured.

“The new Dharavi Notified Area (DNA) masterplan looks to replace the present maze of congestion with a vibrant, inclusive, and nature-rich urban environment,” said sources familiar with the planning.

“The redevelopment plan draws inspiration from the Maharashtra Nature Park, a thriving man-made forest near the Mithi river. The idea is to bring nature into the heart of Dharavi, creating a liveable, sustainable community,” said a source in the know of the project.

Under the plan, a vast central park and a revitalised waterfront along the Mithi river are proposed, turning what is, at present, a languishing waterbody into a scenic social and recreational space.

Additionally, a network of smaller parks and playgrounds will be created adjacent to newly designed neighbourhood centres, offering residents much-needed breathing spaces which are absent in Mumbai’s urban fabric.

According to sources, the masterplan ensures that green pockets and recreational areas are positioned close to the rehabilitation and renewal buildings, allowing easy and quick access to nature for all residents.

The Dharavi Notified Area, being an extremely dense brownfield redevelopment project, necessitated the adoption of special planning norms for social infrastructure, as outlined by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in accordance with Government of India (GoI) guidelines.

Beyond open spaces, the redevelopment will address critical civic deficiencies presently faced by Dharavi’s residents. The existing area lacks a proper sewage system, reliable water supply, fire safety mechanisms, and sufficient public amenities. The masterplan promises comprehensive upgrades across these sectors to ensure enhanced public safety, better sanitation, and improved living conditions.

“The idea is not just redevelopment but transformation — ensuring safety, inclusivity, and opportunities for all Dharavikars,” the source added.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is more than just an urban renewal effort. It is a bold vision to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable community at the heart of one of India’s most vibrant and historic neighbourhoods.

Given its scale, complexity, and ambition, this redevelopment is set to become a landmark not only for India but for cities around the world. “It will demonstrate how inclusive planning along with strong environmental consciousness can transform even the most densely populated and challenging landscapes into thriving, future-ready communities,” a source added.
