Mumbai: Covid-19 cases are seeing a slight rise not just in global hotspots like Hong Kong and Singapore, but also in Mumbai, according to local doctors. However, medical experts have reassured the public that the cases being reported so far are mild and not comparable to the deadly waves that overwhelmed the world between 2020 and 2022. As per the Union Health Ministry’s Covid dashboard, India currently has only 93 active cases, indicating that the situation is far from alarming at a national level.
No Cause Of Major Concern For City
Dr Daksha Shah, executive health officer at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), stated that there is no cause for concern at the moment. “We do see seven or nine odd cases every month, as the Covid-causing coronavirus has become endemic in the country,” she said as quoted by the Times of India. Nevertheless, the BMC’s public health department has instructed doctors to remain vigilant, especially when examining fever-related cases.
Dr Hemant Thacker from Breach Candy Hospital reported two fresh Covid-positive patients on Saturday. One of them had recently returned from London and was experiencing a severe throat infection and persistent cough. The second patient, who tested positive, had no recent travel history.
Dr Pratit Samdani also confirmed that he had treated over six Covid-positive cases in recent days. “Most of them initially seemed like common flu cases, but the tests confirmed Covid,” he told TOI. Notably, the affected individuals were mostly young and not part of the elderly demographic, which is typically more vulnerable to severe illness from the virus.
Internationally, the situation appears more serious. Singapore’s health ministry has reported a 28 per cent spike in estimated Covid cases, reaching about 14,200 in the first week of May. Hospital admissions there have also risen by 30 per cent during the same period. Despite these numbers, Indian doctors maintain there is no reason to panic. Dr Thacker noted that the Indian population has built up a strong level of immunity against the virus over time.
