Mumbai: Maharashtra has reported a gradual increase in Covid-19 cases, with 106 people testing positive out of 6,066 samples collected since January 2025. Alarmingly, 101 of these cases have emerged from Mumbai alone, where the number of active cases now stands at 101.
2 Deaths Reported In Mumbai
Of the 52 patients currently under treatment for mild symptoms, 16 have been hospitalised. Two Covid-related deaths have been reported in the city, both involving individuals with comorbid conditions.
The Maharashtra Health Department clarified that although Covid-19 cases are rising, they remain infrequent and primarily mild in nature. Daily testing is being carried out under the ongoing Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) surveys. Additionally, genome sequencing is underway in Pune to monitor virus variants.
Health Department Says, 'No Reason To Panic' Amid Surge In Cases
The department stressed that the rise in cases is not isolated to Maharashtra but is also being observed in other Indian states and several countries, including Singapore, Hong Kong and parts of East Asia. Despite the uptick, authorities have urged citizens not to panic. “Covid is now an endemic illness, with rare and sporadic cases,” the BMC said in a release. “The virus is present at the community level, but with low transmission intensity.”
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stepped up its monitoring and is prepared for any potential surge. Civic hospitals such as Seven Hills and Kasturba Hospital are equipped with dedicated Covid beds. Seven Hills Hospital currently has 20 MICU beds, 20 beds for children and pregnant women, and 60 general beds. Kasturba Hospital has two ICU beds and a 10-bed special ward with the capacity to expand if needed.
Common symptoms being observed include fever, cough (dry or with phlegm), sore throat, fatigue, body aches, headaches, and, in some cases, loss of taste or smell. The BMC has advised those with symptoms to consult a doctor or visit a municipal clinic or hospital immediately.
Things To Look Our For High-risk Individuals
While encouraging the public not to fear, the BMC stressed the importance of preventive measures, especially for those with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer or liver disease. Citizens are urged to wear masks if symptomatic, maintain physical distancing, wash hands frequently, follow a nutritious diet and get adequate rest.
