Central Railway's ₹800 Crore Kalyan Yard Remodeling Project To Be Completed By March 2027: CR Submits Plan To Bombay HC
The project, costing over Rs 800 crore, is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency at Kalyan, one of the busiest railway junctions in the Mumbai suburban network.

The Kalyan Yard remodeling project, one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades undertaken by Central Railway's Mumbai Division, is slated for completion by March 2027. This information was formally submitted to the Bombay High Court in a recent affidavit by the Mumbai Division of Central Railway.
The project, costing over Rs 800 crore, is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency at Kalyan, one of the busiest railway junctions in the Mumbai suburban network. Upon completion, it will enable the segregation of long-distance train operations and suburban train services. This separation is aimed at boosting the station’s capacity, allowing for smoother train operations.
Officials noted that the current configuration at Kalyan often leads to delays. Many local and mail/express trains are frequently halted at the outer signal due to the unavailability of platforms, as most remain occupied.
After the completion of the Kalyan yard remodeling work, these congestion issues are expected to be addressed to a large extent. "The creation of additional platforms will not only enhance the punctuality of suburban services but also streamline the movement of long-distance and freight trains," said an official.
As part of this ambitious upgrade, a massive deck slab area covering 56,700 square meters will be constructed over the entire platform zone, enhancing weather protection and giving the station a more modern and aesthetic look. "This will also help control the crowd," said an official.
Kalyan Station currently handles a staggering average daily footfall of around 4 lakh passengers and generates approximately Rs 45 lakh in daily revenue. It plays a crucial role as a junction point where the Central Railway line splits towards Pune in the southeast and Nashik in the northeast, catering to more than 750 mail/express and suburban trains daily on its eight platforms.
According to a senior Central Railway official, work on the remodeling project is progressing at full speed. The plan aims to segregate long-distance and suburban train operations for better traffic management and efficiency. A unified Goods Yard operation is also in the pipeline, expected to streamline freight movement and reduce interference with passenger services.
A major feature of the project is the construction of six new platforms, including three new island platforms, each 620 meters long. These will be specifically designed to accommodate long-distance trains operating along both the northeast and southeast corridors. Additionally, a new Goods Yard with 12 receiving and dispatch lines is proposed to ensure seamless freight movement in all directions—northeast, southeast, and down lines—thereby consolidating and optimizing current goods shed functions.

To support the increasing passenger load and improve logistics, a new station building and circulating area will be developed between the passenger platforms and the Goods Yard. As part of the infrastructure improvements, a Road Over Bridge (ROB) will be constructed parallel to the existing Patri Pul, aimed at decongesting traffic and improving station access.
"The project will also include the construction of three new Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), each 12 meters wide, connecting both existing and newly constructed platforms to allow smoother pedestrian movement and reduce overcrowding. In line with sustainability goals, rainwater harvesting systems and enhanced water carriage arrangements for passenger coaches are planned" stated ab official.
According to CR, yard remodeling will also involve improvements in the connectivity and layout of the Goods Shed to make freight operations more efficient and minimize disruption to passenger services.
