Mumbai: The Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) has launched a mental health corpus aimed at providing financial and therapeutic support for Parsi Zoroastrians facing psychiatric illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. This initiative signifies a change in the community's welfare approach, acknowledging issues often kept hidden due to shame or stigma, as highlighted by trustee Armaity Tirandaz.

The fund will cater to hospitalisation, medication, caregiver assistance, rehabilitation, and vocational reintegration. This initiative responds to the pressing need within the community for structured support in light of India's prevalent mental health stigma and inadequate treatment resources.

As many community members have sought help only after years of untreated issues, the fund aims to offer both preventive and responsive care rather than being reactive alone. BPP ensures that fund disbursement will rely on evaluations from mental health professionals, maintaining confidentiality and transparency in support provided.

According to report by Midday, Dr. Rohann Bokdawala, a psychiatrist, underscores the financial burden of long-term psychiatric care, with costs reaching up to R2 lakh monthly, thereby making sustained support crucial. He also notes the stigma associated with psychiatric treatment within the close-knit Parsi community, which can deter families from seeking necessary help.

The BPP's efforts to establish a discreet fund are considered potentially transformative. BPP Chairman Viraf D Mehta views the initiative as essential in fostering open discussions around mental health, which has historically been challenging for many. He encourages community contributions to the dedicated fund, which will exclusively support the mental health needs of Parsi Irani Zoroastrians. The fund will also provide caregiver training and rehabilitation programs, essential for young adults and seniors, who are often overlooked, according to a report by Midday.

Community reactions have been positive, with residents like Kersi Minocher Sanjana noting the importance of addressing long-ignored mental health issues. Others, such as Percy Harver, emphasize the need for transparency in fund management to realize its potential in improving lives. Overall, this initiative is seen as a crucial step in creating a supportive environment for mental health challenges within the Parsi community.
