Mumbai: In the Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, the accused's facial recognition report has come back positive, a senior police officer confirmed. The face of the accused, Shariful Islam, matches the CCTV footage and images in the facial recognition test.
The Bandra police received the forensic science laboratory (FSL) report on January 31, confirming that the arrested accused's face matches the images of the intruder in various CCTV footage, strengthening the case against him.
A police officer stated, "We are confident. We have strong and ample evidence. Now that the facial recognition test has matched, other reports will also follow. But we already have other evidence." Police confirmed that Shariful Islam is responsible for the attack on Saif Ali Khan. Further investigation is underway as authorities gather more evidence to build a solid case against the accused.
During the investigation, even after Shariful Islam's arrest, social media users questioned whether he was the real culprit. Shariful's father gave interviews to several news channels and newspapers, claiming that his son was not the person captured in the CCTV footage. Meanwhile, some media outlets reported that the accused's fingerprints did not match those collected from the crime scene, further intensifying doubts about his identity.
The fingerprint and blood test reports have not yet been released, and the police are awaiting the results. However, a team from Bandra police is in Kolkata, investigating how Shariful entered India, who assisted him, and how he transferred money to Bangladesh, along with other financial transactions. The police have already recorded a woman's statement in Nadia, West Bengal. Shariful obtained a SIM card in her name.
During the investigation, the police received false leads and detained the wrong individuals, which led to doubts even after the real accused was arrested. Currently, Shariful Islam is in judicial custody for 14 days, and an identity parade will be conducted in jail.
