When Madhuri, the beloved elephant arrived at Vantara, she was greeted not just with open arms, but with hearts full of warmth and respect. A video shared by Vantara shows the touching moment she walked into her new home- a “Welcome” message spelled out in vibrant flower petals at her feet, a soft and symbolic gesture for an animal who has known both hardship and endurance. Slowly and thoughtfully, Madhuri took her first steps into the sanctuary, pausing often, observing her new environment with curiosity and calm.

She was soon seen being served a spread of her favourite foods-juicy fruits and fresh vegetables-which she happily munched on, signalling the beginning of a bond built on trust, patience, and care.

The video of Vantara welcoming Madhuri is captioned, "Madhuri’s journey at Vantara begins with gentle care and close attention. We’re taking the time to understand her: what keeps her calm, what makes her comfortable, and what she enjoys. It’s not just about treatment; it’s about helping her settle in, feel at ease, and live life on her own terms.
Step by step, at her pace, with the care and respect she truly deserves."

Who is Madhuri?

Madhuri is a female elephant, previously housed at Nandani near Kolhapur. She is known for her serene nature and years of silent resilience. Her age, along with increasing health concerns, made it necessary to transition her to a facility that could offer advanced medical support and a more peaceful, enriching environment.

Why the shift to Vantara?

Vantara, located in Gujarat, is a modern wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, offering specialised care for elephants and other animals who have been rescued from captivity, abuse, or inadequate living conditions. The decision to shift Madhuri here was made to give her access to expert veterinary attention, a calm atmosphere, and the freedom to live the rest of her life with dignity and comfort.

At Nandani, despite the love she may have received, the space and infrastructure could not fully meet the evolving needs of an ageing elephant like Madhuri.

At Vantara, Madhuri’s journey is being guided gently. Her caretakers are not rushing her-they’re learning her preferences, observing what keeps her calm, and letting her adjust at her own pace.
