One of South Mumbai's most cherished retail landmarks, the Asiatic Store near Churchgate Station, is set to temporarily pause its operations. The iconic shop will shut its doors on July 31, 2025, for a much-needed renovation after nearly five decades of being a part of the city's daily routine. As per media reports, the store is expected to reopen with a fresh new look in about five months.
Asiatic store "temporarily shut"
On Tuesday, July 29, there was a different type of bustle in the aisles than usual. Employees were working hard to pack cartons, dismantle shelves, and provide up to 20% off as part of the clearing campaign.
One shopkeeper was quoted by Mid-day.com as saying, "We’ve been told to vacate by Wednesday." "We'll return to our main outlets elsewhere in the city during the renovation," the attendant added. Numerous people, however, claimed they were unaware of the precise post-renovation plans.
What made Asiatic so iconic?
For most Mumbaikars, Asiatic wasn't just a store; it was a lifeline. Located right opposite Churchgate station, it served as the go-to destination for last-minute gifts, festive decor, office party essentials, stationery, accessories, snacks, leather goods, and even quick passport photographs.

Whether it was office-goers rushing for birthday cakes, college students getting passport-size photos clicked for applications, or people frantically grabbing presents, Asiatic had it all. Its loyal clientele includes everyone from working professionals to students and old-timers who swear by its reliability.
During Valentine’s Day, teens would quietly pick up artificial roses or last-minute gifts. Around Christmas, office-goers would crowd its aisles hunting for quirky Secret Santa gifts.
In a pre-smartphone era, it even doubled up as a landmark meeting point: “Let’s meet at Asiatic” was a common phrase among groups heading out into town.
Short goodbye, not a farewell
Though it's only a temporary shutdown, this news has stirred nostalgia in many hearts. As Mumbai’s pace accelerates and its icons evolve, Asiatic is just undergoing a little refresh, but its stories and spirit remain timeless.
